National Arbiter and Trainer Johnny Wellem A. Carzano began his illustrious chess journey at the tender age of seven, setting the foundation for a lifetime of dedication to the game. As a young talent, he honed his skills as a varsity player at the University of San Jose-Recoletos in Cebu City, where his passion for chess flourished.

Sir Johnny's coaching career is a testament to his exceptional leadership and mentorship. From 2015 to 2016, he guided elementary and high school varsity chess players at the University of San Jose-Recoletos. He continued his coaching tenure at San Carlos University from 2016 to 2019, producing Palarong Pambansa Chess Champions—a remarkable feat that reflects his ability to nurture young talents and elevate them to national prominence.

As a player, Sir Johnny has achieved significant milestones, including dominating the prestigious FIDE-rated Standard Tournament organized by the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) in Quezon City on September 8, 2024. His skills and strategic acumen have also made him a consistent winner across the province of Misamis Occidental, solidifying his status as a formidable force in the chess community.

His love for the game began in his elementary years as a chess player and has since blossomed into a lifelong passion that now defines his remarkable contributions to the chess community.

As a father of three aspiring chess players, Sir Nelford’s legacy extends through his family and his broader impact on young talents. He played a pivotal role in shaping the foundation of the NJSB Chess Academy, guiding its pioneers during its formative months. His dedication to mentoring budding players highlights his commitment to nurturing the next generation of chess champions.

Sir Nelford’s crowning achievement is the establishment of the first-ever chess school in Misamis Occidental—a groundbreaking milestone for the province.
